Dear New Lawn Looker

Dear New Lawn Owner,

Coastal Turf wants to help you turn your house into a HOME!

Why use Turf?

Turfing is often referred to as the “Frame around the Picture”. The instant transformation from brown dusty dirt to lush green grass around your house is extraordinary. At Coastal Turf we have 8 varieties of turf grasses available for you to Green your home. We offer personal advice on how to best DIY your new lawn for your home. Or we can arrange a professional service for a full installation at your home.

What is the value in Turf?

Turf is the single biggest bang for your buck when you build your new home. And independent study has discovered that turf can increase the value of your home upwards of $40,000.

But which Turf is right for me?

Some people prefer the texture os Sir Walter Buffalo, others love the low maintenance of the Empire Zoysia, and some love the softness of the Blue Couch under their bare feet.

Shade, traffic, texture, soil type, sunlight and maintenance are all the issues that should be considered before you purchase your new lawn. CoastaL Turf’s qualified staff, with over 100 years combined experience, can help you make an informed decision for your new lawn. Once we understand what you want from your lawn we can recommend the right turf for your situation.

What about the drought and possible water restrictions?

As farmers, we understand the drought and lack of rain water available. But this shouldn’t stop you from completing your home. At Coastal Turf we have specific measures to combat these situations. We can recommend soil preparation, and other water saving solutions for your lawn. Like a top dress of your new lawn to reduce the amount of water required for healthy growth.

How do you get started?

Simply fill in the contact form and one of our people will get in touch with you to arrange a free measure and quote at your home. Go see our display yard to Chinderah and walk on the different types of grasses, to call us at the farm and come and have a walk over the different varieties.

All the comforts of Home in my Coastal Turf Lawn

I have recently had to spend several days inside. Trapped in bed, forced to watch TV, play my phone, and have people bring me drinks, coming to me at the sounds of a bell. Sounds awesome doesn’t it? Sounds like I was on an amazing holiday and had hot and cold running service coming to pamper me. Well….that’s not really how it went. Really I was quite unwell and had to have a few days in a sterile room, with people making me feel better. Forcing me to drink fluids which will eventually make me feel better. The Nurses were amazing. The Doctor fantastic. And I truely thank them for all their efforts.

Sitting in the cold sterile room with the artificial white light blaring down on me really made me miss outside. Miss the feeling of the cool wind whispering to me and chilling my fingers. Miss the warmth of the Real rays of the Sun fall on my body and warm me against the whispering wind.

I am sure you all know about the perfectly clean ivory plastic covered freezing floors of all hospitals. The immaculate beaming white floors of a hospital are great when you have to clean up “mess”, but not so great when you have really cold feet with nothing covering them and you have to make a quick run to the toilet. Now I say quick, but I think we all know what I am really saying is the slow waddle of a sick person. And being a slow waddle means that my feet just get colder and colder. Even the nice toasty blankets of the warming blanket oven didn’t seem to want to invite the blood to return to by toes.

What I really really missed was my blue couch lawn. Tragic; yes I know. But one of the few luxuries  I love to do of an afternoon is to yank off my dirt and other brown stuff laden boots, ripped of my usually colourful or decorated socks, and take my bare feet for a stroll over the Blue couch lawn, preferably to relax, but realistically to hang out washing. The softness and the cushioning of a year round lush Blue Couch lawn is so comforting to your soul.

I am not sure if I am a believer of Grounding (where you help centre your mind, body and spirit by making physical contact with the ground. Preferably with your feet, rather than your face. Try not to fall), but I am a believer and a choir singer about how wonderful it feels to walk and sit down on my lawn at the end of the day. I could preacher and convert, even preach to the converted (known as my family) about all the wonders and happiness I feel when I come home, turn off the phone, and run my little tootsies through the blades of Blue. I wouldn’t be a preacher though cause  I might waffle on to long. Happier to stand on the side and sing loudly about the Glories of Grass. I think people tend to remember the singing more than the waffle anyway at Church. Especially if the Choir is less than amazing. You always remember the screechers don’t you.

Run your tootsies through the lawn

Having a Blue Couch lawn is a wonderful luxury that I did not realise was a luxury until I don’t have it with me now. Being a couch it is considered to be cheap and nasty, but I can tell you that just because you don not have to go an get a huge bank loan to own it does not mean it is nasty. I mean we all love a little shopping spree at Kmart. And having a Blue Couch lawn is a luxury because it mostly looks after itself. It is drought tolerant (so not much watering) it loves the sand, and enjoys a little salt spray. Blue Couch loves to bask in the hot sun of summers and stay a lustrous blue green colour. The colour is stunning. Almost a blanket of blue which flows across your lawn. Looking beautiful and inviting. And it rewards you every time you come to walk across it with all the warmth and comfort that a good lawn should. (For more info click here ) The tenderness of a beautiful blue couch lawn is calling to me.

This afternoon I will be going home, leaving behind my holiday of white and sterility and returning to my real world of greens and more importantly Blues! Of real smiles and people telling me to get my own drinks. And of afternoons spent with my tootsies soaking up the happiness of the ground  and more importantly my lush winter Blue Couch lawn listening to my kids giggle and laugh as I watch them jump on the trampoline. Just a hint of advice though when you take off your shoes to walk through your super soft beautiful Coastal Turf Blue Couch lawn, Only do it in the afternoon. In the mornings in winter the ground is covered in dew, and this can make your naked feet as cold as if they were walking on a beaming white linoleum hospital floor, and will absolutely make you need to use the bathroom.

Creating Happy Healthy Family Homes

There has been a lot of talk lately about creating a better breathable world for us all to live in. We all want to make sure that the air we breath is fresh, clean and healthy. We are now all so much more aware of the harms that plastic can do not only to our environment but our personal bodies as well. And what is the most basic of things we could all do to ensure the quality of our breathable air is of high standards?

Have a lawn!

Happy Healthy family lawns

According to a recent study performed in the US by TPI, an area as small as 48 square meters of green lawn can provide a family of four with enough clean breathable oxygen for a year! And at the same time this 48sqm of Lawn can also provide the piece of mind and happiness of having a green area for your family to look at and play on. TPI has also researched that seeing healthy green colours mentally makes us all feel happier. And I know that hearing my kids laughing and playing on the lawn always makes me happy.

Air Quality!

My friend has one of those cone shaped air purifiers in her home. It puts a “Forest Friends” smell into the air. I guess it kinda smells like pine. I was thankful that it didn’t smell too much like the Forest Friends as I had thoughts of woodland animals and their musky smell.  But all the Air Purifier really does is put more smells into the air. Where as your lawn will actually absorb all the air around it, absorb all the pollutants and then release beautiful clean fresh air for you and your family to breathe.

So really your lawn is the best air purifier you could ever own. Its easier to use, cheaper to look after and you never have to clean the filters. And it is much more aesthetically pleasing to look at than a cone in your lounge room. Maybe we need to start having a little patch of green lawn in our lounge rooms? Having a real  air purifier in our house rather than a plastic pretend one. Aren’t we all trying to get rid of the plastic?

Instead of importing plastic into our home, lets just use our lawns to make us healthier and happier. Save ourselves money, and save the planet at the same time.  Get a Coastal Turf lawn to create a happy healthy family home. Contact us now!

Winter Lawn installation.

Is it better to install your lawn in Summer or Winter?

Well, personally myself, I prefer to install our lawns in Winter.

I love the hot. Its great to be warm. But I really really hate sweating so much that my clothes feel like they have just come out of a washing machine, but really do not smell as nice. So Summer installations are not my favourite thing to do. But in Winter, even on a really hard working day, my clothes do not become ringing wet, or smell like my teenagers shoes.

The turf itself in Winter does slow down its leaf growth rate, but not its root growth. So in Summer, 3 days after you install your lawn, it is almost screaming out for a haircut. But you can’t run your mower across the top because it will destroy all the little tiny baby roots that are just trying hard to establish. Yet in Winter, the leaf grow is slower, and calmer. And the plant has the reserves to concentrate on root establishment. Your lawn will be well into its life cycle with the roots securely  holding onto your soil, before it will mention calmly that it may require a little trim to stay looking perfect.

In Winter I think you need a reason to get out of your home. A reason to get outside and breath in the fresh air. And Winter can also make you feel a little sad. But nothing makes you feel happier and healthier than being outside on your own lawn. You can walk across your lawn in the middle of the day, bare feet, coffee in hand (or a better beverage if you like) and feel the warmth and happiness fill you mind and body.

Winter is also a great time to see the minimum hours of sunlight your lawn will receive. In Summer your lawn will appear to have all day long sun light. In Winter as the sun is lower in the sky, and your lawn will tell a different story. You will see more shade. This puts you in the best position to know truely the best variety that will thrive in your lawn. We had a customer today who bought beautiful blue couch lawn,  which requires 6 hours of direct sunlight er day, in January. It thrived and looked stunning ; up until winter. The little yard now only reviews 2-3 hours of direct sunlight. And the blue is suffering. Being a new build the customers did not know how many hours the courtyard would receive in winter. So winter is defiantly the best time to know the mimimim amount of direct sunlight per day hours. And get the best fit lawn for your area. These customers now have a pretty Buffalo Lawn in their courtyard.

So best for choice, best for mowing, and best for you. Winter lawns great to install. And by Spring and Summer, you will have a perfect Coastal Turf Lawn to use every single day.

Get in contact with us now to either arrange one of the Boys to install your lawn for you, or we can help you with your DIY project.

Where can you see the different types of turf?

I love Wednesdays. Wednesdays are donut days at the farm. Now you may be thinking that Donut Day is about something really technical, and maybe a trade secret. Well no. Its just delicious circle shaped pastry for morning tea day.

And I love it. I think that Donuts are a crowd favourite. They come in all shapes, sizes, flavours and wheat and noon wheat varieties. A Beautiful round delight for every taste. Like the different varieties of turf that we supply. Different tastes require different types of turf. But please do not eat your turf. It is not as tasty as a donut.

This Wednesday I headed over to Chinderah to purchase some donuts on the way back from visiting a lovely lady. The area I usually park was all taken, so I pulled up in front of JH Williams to leave the car quickly while I ran into to purchase my donuts. Well, donuts for all the crew. Being the polite young lady that I am, and also that I knew they would share, I bought an extra box of donuts for the Boys at JH Williams as a bit of a thank you for looking after our display plots at Chinderah.

As I took a stroll The yard looks amazing, not even the cold winter days have knocked around the display plots. The grass areas really shows you what your lawn can look ,like at your place. Much more I think than if you looked at the grass on the farm. On the farm its just a long paddock, and hard to visualise as a smaller patch at home. But as a smaller plot with pavers and bricks around it, looks more homely. And its near donuts!

So pull in to the JH Williams at (Click the link for directions)  24 Ozone St, Chinderah

And go see the beautiful little lawn plots and that could be your lawn. Order straight away with the boys there, or give me a call and we can arrange pick up or delivery.

Stroll down side the Beautiful Blue

Lawns, The Cold Remedy

This week my lovely children introduced the flu into our household. Now as a mother I love when my kids share. But not a cold. And as I think I have mentioned before, my family is made up of a majority of boys. So the cold progressed quite quickly and violently into a full blown death flu for part of our family. According to some of our family, really they are all lucky to be alive. I mean the kids were snotty and sad. My daughter and I got snotty noses and headaches. Bad head colds. And the boys, well they are young men, got really “Bad” head colds. So bad that they couldn’t reach for the drink.  But thankfully I believe they will live through it.

And having snotty noses, makes you really appreciated breathing. Breathing easily and happily clean fresh air is something that I hope never to take for granted. I am not back to big breaths yet, but I am working on it. At the moment all I can smell (and not very well) is Vicks. But I can remember how wonderful it feels to walk out onto my lawn and take a great big breath. The clean oxygen filling my lungs and helping me to face the rest of the day.

And I can thank my lawn for the awesome clean fresh air that I breath everyday. The air purifier, that I call my lawn, converts enough carbon into oxygen for our family of five. And a family of four needs just over 200sqm of lawn to take great big clean breaths everyday. And in my experience Mother’s and Father’s of a family of four need 200sqm of lawn to go outside away from their children to take big breaths. Or an area to send their children out onto.

My mother always used to tell me to have Chicken soup and go outside when I had a cold. She would send us outside with a blanket or towel to sit on the lawn in the sunshine. I have heard all the good benefits of a homemade chicken soup. I believe its meant to have have all the good minerals that you need to be able to recover. But I never really understood the outside part. This week I do.

I think that a large part of the “going outside” is to get you out of the stale air of the house that has all the coughs and sneezes just sitting within the four walls. I swear that my kids rooms have a smell of sick to them. When I walk into their room and air, I get why I see people wear the medical face masks. So yesterday, I sent my kids outside. I packed them up with a blanket, and a book and put them on the lawn. The air was so much nicer than inside. And with them outside I had the chance to clean our germ filled house. Now it smells like Pine-o-clean. (FYI – This also helps unblock your nose.)

So on the lawn, on their blanket, the  kids sneezed, coughed and expelled the germs from their bodies OUTSIDE. And the lawn was there to support them. It proceeded to expel clean fresh, not germy, oxygen out so their lungs could absorb it and help them get better. And like a sporting field, the lawn absorbed all the bodily fluids, like sneezes that didn’t really make it into the tissues. ( I have boys, so there are lots of these)

The sun kissed their faces. And the smiles started to return.

Today my boys went back to school. Most likely it wasn’t all the chicken soup that I gave them. Or that I made them go out in the sun. And perhaps it is not even because of the lawn. But I will continue to send them outside in the sun on a blanket on the lawn when they are sick. Even if it is just a chance to clean without sad voices behind me.

If you have a cold this year, to have families with sneezes, send them outside. And if you do not have a air purifying lawn, get in contact with us to have one put one in for you.

Tea on the Lawn, a perfect winter time activity.

Winter is one of those months that often draws people inside. But Winter in our area is full of bright sunshine days. And there is no better place to be in winter than outside in the sun on the  lawn.

Winter can cause some some Blues. The feeling that everything is just not as wonderful as it should be. And I think that being cooped inside can help exaggerate this.

Going outside, especially onto your own private lawn, is a great way to get that good rush of healthy happy into your head space.

Research shows that just by having a change of space can really help your head space. Something about a green area makes people calmer and more at easy. I think it must be primal thing, where our basic instincts know that green means food sources.

And what better way to feed that primal urge of green calmer happiness and food that by having a BBQ or picnic on your own lawn. Or by having a nice cup of tea on your lawn in the sun. Sometimes before a big week at work, being inside and having all the natural lights hit you, you need to have a weekend break on your lawn. Just to get all the natural sunlight and fresh clean air that is provided by your lawn, backing your system. To get you ready for another week.

And what better way to enjoy this area more than by having someone else do all the hard work for you so all you have to do is sit back relax and enjoy.

Give us a call and we can come and do all the hard work, and all you will have to do is sit back relax and enjoy your tea on the lawn.

Why choose a Coastal Turf Lawn ?

Whats the advantages of becoming an owner of a  Coastal Turf lawn?

Beauty, Personal Style and Service.

A Coastal Turf lawn is an investment. An investment into your home, your future and your family. So it is something that you should take the time and energy to think about. And, like any investment into your future, you should talk to a professional. At Coastal Turf , we couldn’t think of anyone better to talk to about grass, than the people who actually grow, love and care for your lawn while it is still maturing; (And known as our paddocks), the people who preform installations, and people who also have service lawns regularly. At Coastal Turf we have all these people, sometimes wrapped up into one.

John, Michael and Paul are out on the farm every day manicuring the paddocks to ensure they grow to their full potential to become the best looking grass around. These men are amazing. They can look at a a paddock and instinctively know what each variety needs to enrich its growth. They know when each area is at optimum growth and ready for harvest. And these men and I are the ones that harvest the paddocks, carefully making sure the slab is full of beauty, to become your new lawn.

From our family farm to your lawn.

But before we can put our harvester into our paddocks, Belinda, Barbara, Tony, Brett or Myself will have a chat with you about which varieties, which grade, which feel is best suited to your lifestyle and home. We personally style  with you the perfect lawn.  Our team make sure we take the time to tailor fit each customer with their variety. There is no one grass suits all. We can talk to you over the phone, or we can come to your house and help you turn your house into a hoe with a personal onsite quote.

Some people love a soft cushioning lawn; Others love a tough robust shade tolerant lawn; Others need a combination of the two. The best part about our consult team is that all of us are at different stages of our lives. Our team is made up of Mums and Dads of little and big kids, Grandparents and outdoor people. So with all combined knowledge about the grasses and life experience we pride ourselves on creating the best fit lawn for you. It also helps that all of our team have spent time on the farm, and installed a lawn or two, and preform after care services to lawns.  As part of Coastal Turf’s pre-delivery service, we email you an installation and after care guide. This way if you have decided to DIY you know exactly what the steps and processes are to ensure our Perfect Paddocks become your Luscious Lawn. The only thing we won’t tell you about the installation process is the type of food and drink you should serve to everyone after they have helped you install your new lawn. (Personally, if I am helping you, I prefer a good sausage sandwich and a chilled Rose`. Just saying.)

After our consult team tailor selects a variety to you and arranges the best time for delivery for you, I head down to the farm. Micheal, Paul, John and myself set to work harvesting your new lawn from our gorgeous green paddocks to become your lawn. The turf is stacked on pallets by our Trebro.

These pallets are then loaded onto our trucks and either Paul or Michael will bring these pallets of Green to your place. If you have engaged Tony or Brent to install your new lawn, they will be there when Paul or Michael unload.  If you are a DIY person, or someone who has friends that owe them favours, the boys will ask you where you would like the turf placed for your ease of installation.

The boys installation crew are fantastic. They know the perfect way to ensure the lay of the land is efficient for your needs. They take a dirty brown area and turn it into a gorgeous green lawn. A place where you, your children, family and friends can frolic and relax for years to come. And all without getting your hands dirty. The installation crew will talk to you about the aftercare procedures to ensure the long term health of your lawn. They will of course provide you with the Aftercare guide from Coastal Turf, but sometimes its nicer to have someone explain it as well.

After your lawn is installed, and you consult your guide, but you still have some questions; Give us a call. Have a chat with us about how your lawn is going. We are more than happy to talk to you years into the future about the health and well being of your lawn. We know the best fertilisers, the best weed eradicators, and encourage everyone to be Lawn Grub vigilantes. So we can chat or visit your lawn to make sure your investment returns dividends.

And in any investment, isn’t that the most important part? That you get a return on  what you paid for? By purchasing a Coastal Turf lawn, you are not only buying a beautiful lawn, with the knowledge that you are buying straight from the farm, but you are also getting peace of mind that if you do run across any trip ups in the future with your lawn, then a Coastal Turf Professional with expert knowledge is just a phone call away.

Winter Lawns… Which is best for you?

When you think Winter, do you think about cool crisp days outside on the grass watch or playing sport? Or do you think about a warm fire with the flames licking up into the air? Day or night I think I have the perfect winter lawn for you.

I have 2 boys. And really it is best for all of us, that they outside to play. There is less things to break. And outside they can tackle each other and fall on the soft grass. Less broken bones, less broken furniture. And when my daughter wants to hit a hockey ball, its way better to have her outside. And the Wonderful Wintergreen is perfect for cushioning little (and big) bodies and getting a great roll on a ball.

Thats why the professionals use the green couches on the big grounds and probably on your local sporting field as well. Head over to our varieties page for some more Green Goss.

I know that after a long weekend of watching and  cheering my family at sport ( and being concerned that their faces will not be bruised or harmed. This teeth have cost me a fortune and I really cringe every time I see a ball heading towards their faces. Thank God for mouth Guards. Its a mum thing) I love to sit down and relax with a glass of wine. And think about how my investment in my kids smile has paid off. But my kids still NEED to do something. So we have a fire pit at home. And sitting with an Australian Red in hand, watching the flames lick into the night starry sky is so relaxing. And great for my moving kids. They can through in wood and smile and joke. Our yard is really open so we have the sunlight for a Wintergreen couch around our fire.

But for yards, like my friends, who like a bit more privacy from neighbours and the road, she has less light coming in. Her lawn needs to be a bit more shade tolerant as well as being kid and dog tolerant. Especially in winter when all the plants tend to slow their growth. But funnily enough our kids just keep growing….

Anyway, her lawn is beautiful thick leafed buffalo lawn. So its great to sit down on in the afternoon wintergreen sun and watch our boys preform their amazing skate board tricks, or play a bit of soccer on the lawn. Have a look at our different Buffalo lawns by clicking here.

Or if you would prefer the person touch, just give me a call and I will talk to you about the wonderful lawn that would suit your winter conditions, or sen done of the boys out to quote on site.

Mothers get all the fun!

Do your kids say funny things about you at school? My 10 year old son has a habit of talking without thinking it through. Words flow out of his mouth quicker than he can scan it through his mind to make sure it sounds right. (Sometimes his Father has a similar problem.)

A bit of background information for this story. I work physically on the farm. Every day. I am not one of those ladies that can sit in the office all day. I need to be outside, stacking the turf, digging holes, talking with clients, and generally being a farmer. I love it. Not a lot on my kids Mums are like me though. Most of them work inside, have perfect nails and hair, and always pick their kids up clean. I usually come to school in the truck with turf on the back, mud on my face, and dirt under my nails. My son used to be embarrassed, but he starting to embrace my working look. I secretly think it is because on the deliveries that he comes with me to, people say how lovely it is to see a young man out helping his mum.

Thank you sooo much to all those lovely people who embrace our family business.

Secondly every time I have seen my kids teachers in interviews, I make sure I look like everyone else Mum. I do not go straight from the farm in my work clothes. I go in interview clean face and a touch of make up. If I’m really trying to impress I might even wear a dress.

Two of my little kids (12 and 10 years old) go to a small school where quote often year 5 and 6 come together. Luckily on Friday was one fo those days that my two kids were in the same room, or I wouldn’t have known about this story.

So on Friday Mrs M (My 10 year olds teacher) starts to ask all the students in her class to describe their Mum in 3 words.

According to my 10 year old, most kids had words like lovely, wonderfully, caring. Now he is really keen to impress his teacher and his older sister about how knowledgeable he is. So he started to think of better descriptive words for his Mum than his sister would be able to.

Mrs M  comes to my son and says , “Ok Marcus ,your turn. Describe your Mum in 3 words “. Very proudly he stands up and says loudly “Bossy, Passionate, and Dirty!”  My 12 year old said Mrs M’s face went into a little screwy, like she was trying not to laugh. Other kids started to giggle. Then he thought about what he said. Then he realised; and he started to blush.

“Oh no. I mean she is always covered in mud from the farm. She loves her family and her job sooo much. But she always telling me what to do! “ He blurted out.

I’m not sure what his teacher thought. But I do not think that running a family farm and business was the first to come to mind. I think several other professions may have skipped across her mind.

Turf farming and creating family lawns is a dirty muddy business. But it is full of laughs and fun. I get to work with my Dad, my husband and my kids, creating family lawns. Kinda like being a mum of 2 boys and girl; Its messy and loud, but full of laughs and fun.

So thank you to all the people who support our family business. And know that not only are you giving my kids funny things to say at school, but a work ethic and love of the outdoors. Which we hope to pass onto your family when we help you create your backyard. Having a grassed yard to play in is a special gift that any family can give their children. Rolling around on the grass creates strong happy memories and bodies.

Get in contact with us today so we can help your family get a wonderful green lawn to play on, and my family funny stories to say at school. Next school interview I am going like this!
