Probably like all families, we have some weird and wonderful chats at our dinner table. I’m a Mum and a turf farmer, with a landscaper husband, and 2 teenagers and a 22 year old. We are lucky enough that they all still live at home. So discussions at dinner really range from the weird to the wonderful. One thing we can never all agree upon is which is the best variety of turf.

If you ask me, I love the Aussie blue couch. I just love it. My favourite hasn’t changed for 20 something years now. The soft thin leaves that comfort my bare feet as I walk across the lawn just gives me a little bit of joy. My husband installed the blue couch under my clothes line.

So I get to admire and experince its soft leaves everyday. The lawn loves when the washing drips onto the dark green leaves and offers its a little drink. As I am a lazy lawn owner. I don’t want to be out watering all the time. I forget to fertilise at home ( have done it at work, so tick it off in my head) and mowing is something I think you should do with a large tractor, not something you push. That is why I love the Aussie Blue Couch. It thrives on my neglect.

Tony the Turfman, husband, turf installer and landscaper extraordinaire, loves a buffalo grass. Specifically the Sir Walter. He loves its tough robust leaves that repair quickly, making it perfect for active areas. He has installed a buffalo patch under our basketball hoops. The Sir Walter takes a beating from feet and balls, and occasional dogs trying to help as well. Although it is a little more thirsty than the Aussie Blue couch, it handles the shade like a champion. I must admit, for this area, it looks great, and is perfect for the active area of our home. Turfman says that it is one of his clients favourites as well. Growing thick and lush in the shade, and the sun. The Sir Walter stays green and lush, even in yards with kids and dogs. It is hard to bounce a ball off though.

Our eldest son, all of 22 and who is so sweet and training to become a baker, had the luck of having my mum around when he was little. So he got to hang with Grandma rather than coming to work with Mum or Dad. Probably why he is a baking now and not turf farming. As he got older and stronger though, he helped on the farm a fair bit with my Dad and I, and often went to install turf with The Turfman. So, he has a bit of turf growing and turf laying experince. He says that his favourite is the Coastal Mix. This surprised all the rest of the table.

He told us the story of when he was laying turf with The Turfman when he was in his late teens. They went to a house that had a Mum at home with her little kids. The back yard was all dirt and mud. He remembers the kids watching through the window as they installed the turf. And how happy their faces were when they came outside to play on the grass for the first time. Then he said, with emotion overwhelming his face, he remembers the Mum crying a little, while telling him and the other boys cleaning up it was so wonderful to see her kids so happy. “So coastal mix makes families happy.” he simply stated.

Our daughter is our middle child, who absolutely adores plants. Her whole room is covered in house plants that grow and entangle her room. The nursery is her favourite place to visit on the weekend. Her dream is that oneway someone will open a nursery bookshop. So when the Turfman and I asked for her opinion on the best turf variety, I think we both thought she would side with one of us. But instead she went with the Pacific Zoysia.

Very good friends of ours have the Pacific Zoysia out on their front lawn. Their lawn collects the afternoon sun, and it has always been one of the kids favourite areas to play on. Our daughter and her not blood cousins often preformed gymnastics on the lawn for all the adults to enjoy during Friday evening drinks, or played soccer or football on the lawn. Their Pacific Zoysia lawn was always a place that the kids never wore shoes. She remembers the lawn being soft, good to fall on, and a beautiful colour.

Our youngest son is 16. And as many of you know, 16 year olds, especially boys after they get their license, go from being your sweet little boys, to large gangly beings that rest their heads on top of their mothers to show how tall they are, and often loose the ability to be able to hold conversations. When we asked him for his input into our conversation, we were excited to hear actual words and full sentences come out of his mouth. Rather than the usual grunts, and “yeah Bruh”.

My baby, who is over 6 foot now, tells me his favourite is the Wintergreen couch. We all looked surprised. “Really honey? Why?” I asked truely interested. In his deep almost manly voice, between mouthfuls, he told the table “Because it is the lightest turf slab to pick up.” Ahh. Yes it is. The wintergreen couch can be harvested sooner than the other varieties, making the slab lighter and easier to install. As the youngest, he says he had come with me to more deliveries, and has helped out more on the farm. (Disputed by the other two, but that is a whole other dinner table conversation). He did also say that he likes that softness of a wintergreen lawn, especially on the school oval. It’s great for a game of football.

You would have thought that out of a group of 5 people, at least two of you would agree on one of the turf grasses being the best. But we are all very different people. And therefore all have very different opinions. I think what it really means is that a lawn is personal preference. There is no Right or Wrong lawn. Just what is best for you. There is something that is just so special about Mums. I might be slightly biased, as I am a mum, I had a wonderful mum, and now I have a an amazing step-mum, but I really do believe that Mums are amazing people. Mums are people who love you unconditionally and hold you tight when you need it. And let you go when you are strong. Help you get up when you fall. Tell you when you are right, and when you are not so right, but back you the whole way. Mums are just so important.

When I was younger, and especially as a teenage daughter, I know I never appreciated my mum enough. As a mother of 3 teenagers now, I thank her every day in a silent prayer for all that she did for me. I don’ t think you really appreciate all that your Mum does for you, until you have your own children. Quite often I find myself thanking my mum for not killing me as a teenager , so I could experience the joys and wonders of having my own teenagers. And then also questioning how and why she didn’t. I’m sure she is heaven right now laughing very hard.

I do often find myself saying something know I have heard my mother say that to me. Like if the dishwasher is open and has dirty dishes in it, do NOT put your dirty dishes in the sink, put them in the dishwasher. Or hang up your wet towel. It will not dry on the floor. Or that I am not physic, and cannot read your mind, so you better tell me.

I know have 2 teenage sons, and 1 teenage daughter. So yes, I am slightly insane. I have found that teenage sons do not open their mouths to speak anymore. It is mumble and grunts. Combined with looks of pure confusion when I ask them to repeat what they said so I can understand them. My boys are still very affectionate and will ask for hugs and reassurance. My Teenage daughter though does not believe hugs are necessary, and doesn’t even know how I graduated high school with all that I don’t know. And then in the same conversation will say how amazing she thinks I am and how much she loves us all. It can be a very confusing half hour before school in the morning. In our home eye rolls are common place, and text messages with request for food is the norm.

So far I think I am doing pretty well as a mum. On par mostly with how great my mum was. In saying that, I am sadly lacking in my mums ability to be able to keep enough food into our house though. I always thought it was strange that my mum was at the shops buying food all the time. Now I know why.

As a teenage daughter I ate selectively, and probably really annoyingly. Sorry Mum. As a Mum of 3 teenagers I am failing on the food front. I never seem to have enough food for “snacks”, (which funnily enough appear to be whole meals. I didn’t realise that a full burger was a snack. My fault), or have the RIGHT food available for them. Like having Marvellous creations milk chocolate instead of dairy Milk chocolate. (Mum tip though. Always have chocolate in the house. If not for them, at least for you.)

If I am as good as mum to my kids as my mum was to me, then I will be very happy. My Mum supported me through all my tantrums, fears, scares. Like my huge mental breakdown during my HSC exams. She held and feed me and made sure I had enough sleep and smiles to get through my exams and come out the other side a better person. My Mum also supported and shared with me some of my greatest triumphs, like when I got my P license, buying my first car, and then as I got older starting my career and own family. And now I get to share some of those moment with my kids.

My mother passed away a long time ago now. And my father remarried a wonderful lady, who is now my Step-Mum. But like the Bradey Bunch, “the only steps on our house are the ones that lead upstairs.” Which means I know have another chance at having a wonderful mum in our lives. (And an amazing sister and new brother too).

And also another chance to go to a wonderful wise woman and ask for tips and advice on life. Because that is what’s Mums are for! Being the voice if reason to tell you the real truths. No matter what they are. Some good, some bad.

I go to my new Mum for reassurance that I am not insane. I think as a mum, you have lots of self doubt moments. My new Mum is great at supporting me when it comes to dealing with teenagers, and husbands and Fathers, and all the fun and games they come with. Which is so valuable. I know that sometimes I just need to go to my New Mum and ask if this too will pass? And she reassures me that I am doing my best, and really so are they. And that it will work out well into the future. And Hugs are so important.

In my life, Mums are so amazing and wonderful. I feel so blessed and humbled to have started with my mum loving and looking after me, to me loving and cherishing (and so far not killing them) my own children, to the gift of another mum in my life.

I am sure that your Mum, new or original, is important in your life as well. Or maybe you need to also look at how amazing you are as someone’s Mum. And all the wonderful things that you do to ensure that your kids have smiles and hugs.

This Mothers Day, because we can hug our Mums again, why not do it on a beautiful new lawn you have installed for her? Or have your kids help you install a new lawn, so they can play outside and you can sit back and relax and watch the smiles you put own their faces.

I truely believe that although your family is a really important part of all of our lives, having a great solid group of female and male friends is super important. And having that group be diversified beings results in fun, giggles, laughter and love.

I am usually the boring one in our friend group. My friends are all really interesting people., with what always seems to me to be really exciting interesting lives.  They tell me I have an interesting life, but all I really know about at the end of the day is making sure my kids are still alive and happy, my husband is feed and reasonably happy (depending upon how much he annoys me) and lawn grass. Thats not that exciting. Well in saying the it can be when I have to navigate the lives of a Tweenager, teenager and a big 10 year old.

But I do have friends who are super amazing and fun. And they are the perfect people to talk to so I can get away from  the daily stresses of being a Mum, Wife and Owning your own business. And always great to sit down with to have a chat, and possibly a glass of wine. The kids can frolic up and down the street, on the lawn or just not in our general vicinity. We all have “big” kids now. Which is great. So much less stressful and enjoyable. Give them a ball, a bike, a scooter, and some food, and they all play together with little interference from the “Grown-Ups”. 

In one of  our recent debriefs of our lives, one of my magic friends found this article about Earthing. From what I understood Earthing says how important it was to all of us to walk bare foot on the natural products, like soil and grass, to earth our body, relieve stress and in general get in sync with our surroundings. All of us work in shoes. Me in boots, several of my friends in high heels, and some in flat, need to be comfortable work shoes. We all walk and work hard. Easily getting in our 10,000 steps per day. And we quite often become out of sync with our surroundings. Or thats what we decided anyway.

So after our 3rd, possibly 5th glass of wine, we decided that firstly, that our husbands can all come and pick us up and take us home. Secondly and most prevalent, we decided we should all earth ourselves. So we took off our shoes, and walked outside onto my friends beautiful lawn. Which quite fortunately for all of us, was installed by Tony the Turfman, supplied by Coastal Turf. So the beautiful Blue couch lawn was soft, and comforting and inviting for our bare sore feet. And it turns out – very Earthing! We synced ourselves to the natural earth around us. We could all feel the stress leave our bodies, and become more aware of what was around us. Our breathing slowed and our conversation flowed.

It was also much cooler outside on the lawn in the shade, than inside my friends house as well. So we all sat down, chiefly to ensure we could totally sync ourselves to the earth, and also because it was a beautiful place to sit and watch the kids.

Cheese and wine on the lawn was a perfect Friday afternoon combination to ensure we had earthed ourselves, and mentally re-invigorated ourselves on the lawn. So I can vouch that Earthing does work. We all felt better after our earthing, and time on the lawn.

Last year I wrote about how snoring will effect your lawn. Not your snoring, but my husbands very loud abrasive house shuddering snoring. This very loud noise is why my children can sleep through ANYTHING! Fire Alarms, Trains, City noises, LOUD MUSIC. You name it they can sleep through it. Almost peacefully. I on the other hand tend to get a slight tick on the side of my face  on day 4 with out sleep. On the farm I tend to get a little cranky by 4pm. Turf gets a bit stacked to the side after a long night. And I do get very vicious on the weeds. The boys now have  secret chocolate stack that they throw at me when they se the “I haven’t Slept” Face.

This week though I have slept beautifully.  As bad as the rest of this is going to sound, I have been well rested. Kinda.

Last week Tony was helping my Dad fence along the cattle paddock. And being the good country boy that he is, and with his lovely strong arms, he reached up to snap a branch off in the way of the to be fence. Unfortunately for him, the branch didn’t just snap off and fall to the ground, as was his amazing plan, but instead the branch snapped further back than he is expected. His arm was not quick enough to come up and protect his face. So as the branch broke, his hand which was on the further end of the branch, worked as a pivot to swing, quite hard, the end of the branch closet to the tree, (as well as his face) into his nose. Braking it quite spectacularly. There is nothing quite like excessively bleeding everywhere in extreme pain with your father-in-law and a person who you don’t really know well enough to be really hurt with.

Tony had my ute. Which being a mum means I have baby wipes in the car. Religiously! So Tony stuck nearly a whole packet of baby wipes up his nose to steam the bleeding (he didn’t think that my sanitary Girl things were useful ). And  quick call to me to say “honey, I need  some clothes and an ice pack. Possibly a beer.” My Dad was down the other end of the fence and didn’t see what happened, so just started to yell to him to hurry up with the next line. This probably didn’t aide in easing his embarrassment. When Dad arrived to Tony, my Dad who is not good at blood AT ALL, turned a trifle bit pale and had a sit down with Tony until we arrived.

Kids in tow, off I went down to the cattle farm and packed my husbands nose with clean more absorbent tissues, applied ice, gave dad a drink and then helped them to finish the fencing.

That night we settle down to bed after  few beers to “Stem the pain. Didn’t you read the article on Facebook? Everything on Facebook is true.” I am hoping that was just the pain talking and not real.  Usually after a few beers, Tony snores louder than the fright trains I lived next to at Uni. But Friday night, there was nothing! I think that the brake may have actually straightened his nose enough to stop the loudness of his snoring.

So this week, other than the occasional wake up for kids bad dreams, and Tony’s sore face needing attention, I have been able to get to sleep, even after Tony has fallen asleep before me. I have Stayed asleep. And woken up fresh and happy.

So pallets are stacked and loaded beautifully. My deliveries are completed with a smile, and I’m a bit too chatty on the phone.

Hopefully his nose heals in this position. And the snoring will stop, or at least ease off a bit.

This week has been all about going back to school for us and Tony the Turfman’s boys. The Boys said it was better than going back to school because they got to spend all day outside on the school oval, instead of having to go inside a classroom.

I really do hope they learned something though. I mean they all already know how to install quality turf, green side up. They know how to role so that no gaps are left and the ground is even for kids to play on. And they do already know how to drive the skid steer around to place the turf percent for installation.

After the floods, areas around Murwillumbah were deemed unsafe of the kids, the  town has been working really hard to get new green areas for our kids to play. And what is more green than Grass!

This new area will be great for sports carnival. lunchtime football games, and the chasing games across the grass. Ahh to be young again and run around on the grass.

Everyone has those really fit crazy friends that are all about how strong and healthy they are. I have noticed that these peole usually work in an office all day. And I think that the sitting and using all there brian power all day would make you physically jumpy, so you would want to go to the gym, run for kilometers, or do those crazy Tough Mudda competitions.

At the moment I have a group of wonderful crazy friends who are going into a similar competition in the Numinbah Valley. It has all the great events like running through the mud, crawling through the mud, lifting heavy wet muddy things, and all those great adventures. And my great friends, who I love very much, and I must admit only really see me after I have showered after a day on the farm, asked if I would like to join them. I’m not sure if my face really conveyed what I was truely feeling.

I think my face said, “oh thats really funny you guys are joking with me.” And my head was thinking- “what are they crazy? This is what I did last Tuesday, and I didnt do it for fun.” I did it beacuse someone needed turf for a bank that was eroding away. We cut turf with the old hand stacker in the rain and the mud. I ran through the muddy wet padocks. I lifted the very heavy turf slabs (in the wet the slabs can reach up to 15 kilos each. In the dry, each slab is roughly 8-12 kilos each. Always remember to use your knees to lift when you are unstacking turf to install it at your house. They are heavy. ) onto the pallet and covered myself in all sorts of muddy goodness. I then, actually quite accidently, went to walk over to my tractor and sliped over in one of the numerous slippery muddy puddles and ended up crawling through the muddy puddle to get the the tractor.

Although this was different than at the Tough Mudda things I guess. I did have my dog licking my face to to encourage me the move faster to the tractor. I then scaled my way up our tractor into the seat and wipped my glasses clean so I could pull in the pallets from the paddock to place them on the truck so that our wonderful driver could get the pallets on site as quickly as possible to save his soil leaving his bank.

On a side note, that day we found a leak in my tractor tyre, that may or may not have been cause by me clawing my way up it in the wet muddy state I was in. So we had to change the type. Which meant taking a tyre from the tractor shed and moving it by hand all the way over to the tractor. About  half a k. As I was moving it, I must admit I did think, well at least I don’t have to join a gym.

When we arrived at the lovely mans house, Tony the Turfman, his boys and I installed 200sqm of green couch on his bank to stop the erosion. As I carired the heavy slabs one at a time, I remebered why I hate laying turf in the rain. Its heavy, you get muddy, and you tend to slip on sloping blocks. But, then I looked back on what we had done.  We went from seeing brown yucky mud everywhere to seeing beautiful green lining the bank. We really had a sense of accomplishment and pride that we could help so quickly, and that had helped a person turn thier dirt pile into a thing of beautiful green. The gentleman was very appricative as well. I think mostly because he didnt have to install the turf himself, and partly becuase we have ensured the entegrity of his bank.

So if you too have wonderful crazy friends who want you to do Fun things like Tough Mudda, ask them to come over to your place this weekend instead. Order a few hundred meters of turf, turn on the sprinkler, and get them to install your new lawn. Tell them they wont even have to pay a registration fee. You might even give them a sausgage at the end.

What is so good about your turf compared to others? That’s a question that I get asked a lot. Well I can’t speak for other turf farms.  I don’t know what the quality of their turf is like. But I can tell you about all the great things our turf has!

Before a slab becomes your lawn, it is apart of our paddocks. Our paddocks manicured with organic nutrients and supplements to ensure that the soil has all the right food for the different turf grasses.

We also make sure there is enough micro-organisms within the soil; so things like good bacteria and worms, to promote roots growth and leaf colour.

No Nasty Bugs In The Soil

We then ensure that no nasty bugs are in the soil, trying to undo our good work; like Lawns grubs and Black Beetle.  And my wonderful little dogs do their best to keep the ducks off the paddocks. Ducks do love a good lawn to eat. And they know quality lawn turf grass when they see it.

The paddocks are mown regularly to promote a thick lush covering, at a height suitable to the turf grass type. We also do some super secret Coastal Turf amazing things to make sure our paddocks look amazing. Before Paddocks Become Lawn

Before our paddocks become your lawn, we chat with you about your lawn wants and needs, to make sure that we deliver to you the right type of grass to be your new lawn.

Many people love their buffalo lawns, others love the Couches, and many people enjoy the easy going nature of a Zoysia. Sunny areas, shady areas, and areas that are used non stop by energetic dogs, or kids, or both! we make sure we match the

right type of lawn to you.

Then we harvest your new lawn. Our turf slabs are at least 3 and a half centimetre thick, usually 4cm. And this thickness includes at least 2cm of soil and root stock. And then the rest is thick lush leaf.

By having the soil at on the slab, we ensure that the roots have a healthy productive environment to ensure its establishment as your new lawn.

The roots go to its new home in your lawn with all the nutrients and moisture we have at the farm, giving it the best start in life we can. This means that the leaf can stay green, lush and fluffy as your new lawn. Looking beautiful. Its less likely to go into extreme shock when you install the slab as your new Lawn.

When We Deliver Your Lawn

When we do come to deliver your lawn, even on a Saturday morning, we make sure your turf is freshly harvested the night before for early morning delivery. This means the leaves have only stopped photosynthesis for a minimum amount of time. Making the slab healthier and happier when it becomes your new lawn.

When we take the turf off our truck and place it around your area to be turfed, we use our Bobcat with 4X4 wheel drive to get the turf as close as possible to where you want to install your new lawn.

Making life easier for you. Our skilled and talented delivery men (John and Mick) lift the turf off the pallet and place it on the soil for you, and take the pallet home with them. Leaving you with less mess and fuss to clean it up. Just a lawn to install and enjoy..

We always send along a little installation guide for you to help with the creation of your new Lawn. By following the simple easy steps, you can ensure the thick lush slab we deliver to you becomes a wonderful thick fluffy lawn, that can be enjoyed by your family and friends, and be the envy of neighbours.
